I’ve long said the monochromatic farmhouse look has gone out the window, as have dark gray walls and a sterile-looking, perfectly curated space. The kitchen of today (and tomorrow) has a sense of warmth to it, with glowy-hued finishes, delicate materials and classic elements that capitalize on natural light and texture.
Ironically, a modern kitchen might feature patinated, aged brass hardware, along with moody, deep color tones and soft, elegant stonework. If a prospective buyer walks in and imagines cozying up to the center island to make cocktails for their guests, you’re doing something right.
Into the Woods
When it comes to cabinetry, there’s no one shade that’s “in.” French white oak can look just as chic as a dark walnut. It’s all about what works for you and your space. The one trend that remains is custom wood panels fitted to hide appliances like a refrigerator, dishwasher or trash compactor for a totally seamless look.
Countertops for Longevity
Modern kitchens thoughtfully blend function and form, with countertops that not only look beautiful but will continue to age gracefully … just like us all, right?! Carrara marble never disappoints, soapstone is durable and natural-looking, and of course quartzite adds refinement and durability, especially if you cook a lot. Create the kitchen of your dreams, with your dream material that’ll withstand wear and tear, or even look better because of it. Perfection is overrated; in a kitchen, imperfections mean you’re making memories around the heart of your home.
A Statement Detail
If you want to go bold, do it with one big statement design piece, like a classic checkerboard floor, a handmade artisanal tile backsplash or a tiled ranged hood over the kitchen island. A little goes a long way when it comes to adding unique, unexpected design to your kitchen, for the rest, stick to the tried-and-true brands for appliances, hardware and smart-home tech.
Minimal Trendy Design
Kitchen designs come and go, so if you do want those organic-shaped pendant lights, shell-shaped drawer pulls or the earthy dark green walls, go for it. Lights, hardware and paint color can be swapped out without a major overhaul of the entire kitchen.
In the end, whether you’re selling your home tomorrow or in ten years, a kitchen should be what you need and enjoy. After all, you’re the one living–and cooking–in it, so why not design it exactly as you dreamed?
